The Bonner Bridge is a 2.5 mile long structure along North Carolina's Outer Banks that connects Pea Island and Bodie Island. The bridge spans Oregon Inlet, which provides ocean access from the Pamlico Sound. It is part of North Carolina Highway 12, providing access to the mainland for communities south of Nags Head. Due to the continual shifting of the Outer Banks a portion of the bridge is now located over land. The bridge sustained damaged damage in 1990, but was repaired. Plans for a replacement for the bridge are being developed. A controversial jetty system to protect the inlet and the bridge has been proposed and debated for years.
